सन्‍त दादू दयाल

सोलहवीं शताब्दी के संत दादू दयाल, अकबर के शासनकाल में राजस्थान में रहते थे। वे जन्म से मुसलमान और पेशे से धुनिया थे । ‘दयाल’ शब्द उनके नाम के साथ इसलिए जुड़ गया क्योंकि वे सभी से दयालुता और प्रेम से पेश आते थे, भले ही कोई उन्हें गाली भी देता हो। उनकी रचनाएँ हमें उपदेश देती हैं कि मनुष्य-शरीर मुक्ति का द्वार है, परंतु हमारा अहम् या हौंमैं प्रभुप्राप्ति के मार्ग में बाधक है। वे हमें संदेश देती हैं कि हमारे मन को भजन-सुमिरन के द्वारा क़ाबू में किया जा सकता है; और भजन-सुमिरन के आंतरिक अभ्यास की गुप्त युक्ति केवल किसी पूर्ण गुरु से ही सीखी जा सकती है। दादू साहिब की लंबी कविताओं को पढ़ने से हमें पता चलता है कि किस प्रकार उन्होंने सुंदर उपमाओं के माध्यम से हमारा ध्यान इस विडंबना की ओर आकृष्ट किया है कि हम संसार में आवश्यकता से अधिक उलझे हुए हैं, जबकि मौत तेज़ी से हमारी ओर बढ़ रही है और ऐसे समय में केवल प्रभुप्रेम ही हमारी सँभाल कर सकता है

Dadu, a sixteenth-century mystic who lived in Rajasthan during the reign of Akbar, the Mughal emperor, was a cotton carder by profession and Muslim by birth. He was called dayal, "the compassionate one," because he showed love and compassion to everyone, even to those who abused him. His poetry teaches that the human body is the door to salvation but that ego stands in the way of God-realization; that our mind can be controlled through meditation; and that only from a perfect Guru can we learn the secret of this inner meditation practice. Through translation of many of his lengthy poems, the reader sees Dadu's use of strong images to contrast our over-involvement in the world with the fact that death is fast approaching and only the Lord's love will sustain us.
