સરમદ શહીદ

યહૂદી સંત સરમદનો જન્મ સત્તરમી સદીમાં ઈરાનમાં થયો હતો. તેઓ વેપારી તરીકે ભારત આવ્યા હતા. અહીં તેમને આધ્યાત્મિક અનુભવો પ્રાપ્ત થયા. સરમદે શીખવ્યું કે પરમાત્મા એ કોઈ એક ધર્મની જાગીર નથી. તેમની ચોપાઈઓ (રૂબાઈઓ)માં તેમને પોતાને થયેલી પ્રભુ મેળાપની આંતરિક અનુભૂતિ અને એ દ્વારા પ્રાપ્ત થયેલા આનંદ અને ઉલ્લાસની અભિવ્યક્તિ છે. બુલંદ અવાજે એમણે નિર્ભયતાથી આપેલા ઉપદેશને કારણે કટ્ટરપંથીઓએ એમને મોતને ઘાટ ઉતાર્યા હતા. આ પુસ્તકમાં સરમદના ઉપદેશનું વિવરણ, એમનું જીવનચરિત્ર તથા એમની ચોપાઈઓનો સંગ્રહ છે. પુસ્તકમાં એ સંદેશ આપવાનો પ્રયાસ કર્યો છે કે સરમદના ઉપદેશમાં જે વાતોનો ઉલ્લેખ છે તે યહૂદી, ખ્રિસ્તી, ઇસ્લામ, હિંદુ અને તાઓવાદમાં પણ છે અથવા એમ કહો કે સમગ્ર વિશ્વના આધ્યાત્મિક ઉપદેશોમાં એ જોવા મળે છે.

Sarmad, a seventeenth century Jewish saint, was born in Persia and travelled to India as a trader, ultimately finding spiritual realization. Sarmad taught that God cannot be confined to any particular religion. His poems express the ecstasy and bliss of union with the Lord through direct personal spiritual experience. His outspoken style and the boldness of his teachings led to his execution by the orthodoxy. The book contains an analysis of Sarmad's teachings, a sketch of his life, and a collection of his poetry exploring the commonalities with mystic teachings worldwide as found in Judaism, Christianity, Taoism, Islam, Hinduism and other religions.
