Description

The Bhagavad Gita, which means ‘The Song of the Lord’ is commonly known as the Gita. The Gita’s universal message is renouncing the desire for action rather than the action itself. Since the world is sustained and regulated by the Divine, and human beings are here for a specific purpose, the Gita does not envisage a cleft between life here in the world and life in the Divine. Rather it demonstrates how to work in the world and yet continue to remain in tune with the Divine. That’s why at the heart of the Gita is the all-too human quandary of its central character Arjuna, who, on the eve of the great battle of the Mahabharata, faces an existential dilemma: Should he fight with members of his own clan in order to combat a great evil or should he refrain from action because of family loyalty and aversion to conflict? Krishna, the name given to the Lord, who acts as his mentor, explain the way out of the dilemma by diving deep in to the purpose of human life and outlines the paths to liberation of the soul. Part one of the book provides a scholarly translation of the Bhagavad Gita and the author has elaborated the verses where ever needed. Part two offers an interpretation of the Gita’s teachings.
